Preschool books about water teach children valuable lessons

Water makes life on earth possible. Without it, neither humans nor animals would be able to survive! Children find this notion endlessly fascinating.

How does water turn to ice and then to snow? What is condensation, anyway? Why is water so necessary to sustain humans, animals, and our environment?

Preschool books about water teach kids important facts about water, from how it nurtures both people and the environment to how it takes on various different forms depending on atmospheric conditions.

These books about water for kids are wonderful teaching tools

Through clever protagonists, snappy text, and vibrant illustrations, the picture books below are perfect for home and the classroom. They can be shared with our youngest readers, but they can also be pored over by elementary-aged students.

Frequently asked questions

How do you explain water to a child?

Use picture books, of course! Preschool books about water are a great way to introduce kids to the water cycle, teach them the significance of water to sustain life on earth, and get them thinking about the importance of water conversation. Not only are the books on our below list informational, but they are engaging and fun, too!

Why is it important to teach kids about water?

In teaching children the significance of water, we also teach them valuable lessons about water conservation. Once kids comprehend why they need water for their own bodies and how the earth wouldn’t survive without water, they recognize the preciousness of this resource and the importance of protecting our limited water supply. It is never too early to make our readers environmental superheroes who learn to use their water wisely!

The Rhythm of the Rain
By Grahame Baker-Smith

Children will identify with the young boy in this stunning picture book who plays in his favorite pool by the side of a mountain. When the weather changes and it begins to rain, he empties the water from his little jar into the pool, and as he races down the mountainside, he knows that somewhere in all the water flowing beside him is the water from his little jar. We love the way this beautiful picture book captures the movement and mystery of water, from the raindrop to the river to the deepest ocean.

Rain!
By Linda Ashman and Christian Robinson

It’s a rainy day cityscape! We simply love the way this delightful weather book for kids shows how different people can respond to the same event – in this case, a rainy day. An old man grumbles while a young child plays. Can the little boy’s exuberance cheer up the grumpy man? We love how this story reminds us that there’s always a way to find sunshine on a rainy day.

The cover of The Water Princess, one of our all-time favorite books about water.
The Water Princess
By Susan Verde and Peter H. Reynolds

Princess Gie Gie’s kingdom is beautiful. The only thing missing is clean drinking water. No matter how hard she tries, she can’t bring the water closer to her village. Instead, she must travel miles to and from the well each day just for enough water to cook, drink and clean for that same day. Each night when she lays her head down, she knows that her journey will repeat again tomorrow. Yet Gie Gie never gives up and dreams of a day when her village will have crystal-clear water of its own. This is a beautiful book, inspired by a true story, that intrigues children and adults alike, introducing them to the water crisis and the many children worldwide that do not have access to clean water. One of my all-time favorite picture books.

Outside one child’s bedroom, window, there is a river. Where will it take her? Her imagination sets sail as she ponders the view outside, envisioning a small boat transporting her on the flowing water from farms to factories to forests, then out to the deep ocean, and back home again. We love this child’s creative journey and the way she manages to explore the world around her without ever leaving the comforts of home. This is such a beauty!
