Preschool books about opposites are important concept books

Opposite books for kids are important concept books for the preschool library.

Concept books are simple stories that teach basic ideas to our preschool learners. They contain information on fundamental concepts, such as counting, the alphabet, colors, and shapes.

Opposite books explore relationships between two things

Learning to compare and contrast objects is an important skill for preschoolers and young children. Not only does this help children describe things, but it also helps kids develop a stronger understanding of particular ideas and concepts.

Preschool books about opposites teach children everything from size (big and small) to emotions (happy and sad) to spatial relationships (over and under, near and far). They give young readers new and important knowledge in addition to essential language to communicate about the world around them.

We absolutely love these fabulous stories that are perfect for read alouds at home or sharing with a group in the classroom. Check out these fabulous preschool books about opposites!

Frequently asked questions

What is a concept book?

Concept books are picture books, often board books, that introduce basic concepts to our youngest readers. These books contain concrete information on a particular idea, such as the alphabet, colors, shapes, opposites, and the like.

Why are concept books important for young readers?

Concept books help teach young readers about the world around them! They are fabulous for preparing your children for preschool and kindergarten, and they are important components in early literacy. Further, concept books help with speech development by encouraging children to put labels to objects and concepts in their everyday world.

What is your favorite preschool book about opposites?

I am head over heels in love with Gray Malin’s A World of Opposites, featured below. It contains stunning and clever photographs, and it teaches young readers about opposites in the most unique way. It also makes a fabulous coffee table book, because it’s truly that gorgeous!

Sandra Boynton can do no wrong, and like all of her other board books, this preschool book about opposites features darling illustrations, simple text, and goofy animals in silly situations! How about mommy’s cookies or coffee? Through expressive illustrations of a young toddler trying many different foods, this book never fails to make little ones laugh as they discover what foods may taste great – and which ones are quite the opposite!

The cover of Opposites TouchThinkLearn, one of our favorite preschool books about opposites.
Opposites TouchThinkLearn
By Xavier Deneux

The TouchThinkLearn books are, in my humble opinion, some of the best board books on the market, and I absolutely adore their preschool opposite book. The raised, die-cut pieces make this book a tactile experience so different from other opposite books out there. The graphics are simple and bright, and each page brilliantly engages children on both visual and sensory levels, creating an immersive way to learn essential concepts. With interesting opposites such as heavy and light, outside and inside, kids are invited to touch and experience the pages. As they experience this preschool book about opposites in a tactile way, they won’t even realize they’re learning!

This book is a beauty, and it is perfect for your youngest readers!

The cover of Double Take! A New Look at Opposites, one of our favorite preschool books about opposites.
Double Take! A New Look at Opposites
By Susan Hood and Jay Fleck

This artistic book engages kids immediately with a simple question: Do you know opposites? Yes or no? Some opposites, after all, are a piece of cake. But what is an opposite without a healthy dose of perspective? How do you know tall without knowing short? How about above and below? As the author explains, “not every duo is so black and white” because some opposites and meanings will vary depending on the situation or the observer. I love the way this pitch-perfect rhyming book encourages kids to analyze opposites from all sides before making a decision. This is another high-level concept book that will have kids talking for days about what they see on these clever, thought-provoking pages.

The Huey’s In What’s the Opposite
By Oliver Jeffers

Does anyone know the opposite of the beginning? In this hilarious and extremely unique concept book, readers will be introduced to some fascinating opposites. The first are easy of course. Jeffers throws readers a bone with up and down, high and low. But how about lucky and unlucky? Or, even crazier, half-full and half-empty? This is a fun book, equal parts simple and complex, that gets readers talking and thinking. In my world, any book that prompts an awesome conversation is an absolute winner!

Using colors, shapes, lines, and textures, Willems explores the world of opposites through awesome artwork. Abstract illustrations invite children to think about particular questions.
