Weather books for preschool delight young readers

It’s raining,

It’s pouring,

The old man is snoring…

There’s no debate that kids are mesmerized by the weather. Rainy days delight them. Snow captivates them. Thunder and storms can simultaneously excite and cause fright.

Weather books for preschool help children learn about the sometimes foreseeable, often unpredictable weather outside our windows.

Weather books for kids help children understand our climate

Because our weather is always changing, it can dramatically affect our everyday lives. Learning about the weather is a fabulous way for kids to hone both their powers of observation and prediction-making skills. This subject is one our littlest readers can easily relate to, and it offers a great foundation for science basics.

When sharing weather books with children, kids come to better understand our climate and how it changes. Not only will they learn how to prepare for different kinds of weather, but they will gain a basic understanding of important weather patterns.

Weather books for preschool bring natural sciences to life, and these stories will delight your young learners. Enjoy!

In addition to reading fabulous weather books, teaching children how the sky looks and what the air feels like at a particular moment go a long way toward helping preschoolers understand weather patterns. Children love learning about the world around them, and one topic that mesmerizes them to no end is the weather. From rainy days to sunny days, blizzards, and hurricanes, the weather is fascinating to children! Learning about the weather helps encourage reasoning skills and logic, and it also provides a perfect opportunity to teach kids important safety measures.

What is your favorite weather book for preschool?

I’m a Miami gal, born and bred, so I have always loved books about snow! John Rocco’s beautiful story, Blizzard, brings this weather event to life, from the first gentle snowflakes to the mounds of snow that prevent families from opening their front doors. I also love his book Hurricane for how it authentically captures the intensity of a storm and the beauty of a community rebuilding together in its aftermath. Both of these books are featured below.

Blizzard
By John Rocco

Blizzard is a fabulous picture book based on the author’s real-life experience during the infamous blizzard of 1978 which brought fifty-three inches of snow to Rocco’s Rhode Island town. Beginning with just a few flakes and ending with mounds as high as stop signs that kept him from opening his front door, Blizzard tells the story of a transformative snowfall, including the magic, the anxiety, and the tremendous relief at seeing the first snow plows break through the drifts. One little boy’s favorite place in the whole wide world is the old, splintery dock right in his neighborhood. But when a hurricane comes to town, his community – and his favorite dock – is transformed. From the gloom that arrives as the storm approaches to the drama of the ferocious winds and the daunting aftermath, this book offers an authentic and important look at how a hurricane can overwhelm a town. Most importantly, the story does a wonderful job of illuminating the beauty that arises from the darkness. Even amid the destruction, the boy’s community comes together to rebuild. I am the Storm
By Jane Yolen, Heidi E.Y. Stemple and Kristen and Kevin Howdeshell

There are so many weather emergencies children may face on a given day, and this lovely book reassures children through their anxiety about these events. Four events are depicted here – a tornado, a blizzard, a forest fire, and a hurricane – and through each one, a family prepares and shows resilience as they face the weather the day brings. I simply love the book’s message: though the weather is powerful, we are, too. Empowering, important and oh-so-comforting, this book is a true treasure.

Tess shouts, “come on, rain,” as she waits for the sky to open up and wrap her world in rain. When it comes, Tess, her friends, and their joyful mamas celebrate its arrival by dancing and singing in the damp street. I absolutely love reading this book with my students young and old for how it so vividly captures the moment of the first rainfall after weeks of heat and drought. It incorporates all five of the senses, making it a dramatic and evocative read-aloud that has students erupting in applause when the last sentence is read. A beauty!

The Everything Kids Weather Book

This fact-filled book will captivate readers, and the puzzles and games included within the pages make learning fun. This is definitely a book for bigger kids but is a terrific primer that will grow with even your youngest readers. We had to include this great read in our collection!
