We love STEM books for kids here at Happily Ever Elephants, especially when they teach practical, important concepts like how to code! HOW TO CODE A SANDCASTLE, by Josh Funk and illustrated by Sara Palacios, is one such book, and it gets two enthusiastic trunks up from our crew!

Coding.

Like it or not— understand it or not— it’s everywhere.

And there is no question about it- coding is undoubtedly our future, with some even believing that it will eventually become a course requirement to graduate from high school.

So many parents want their kids to learn how to code – but many of us don’t even understand it ourselves.

What to do?

Turn to a book, of course. Especially a coding book your kids will love to read for its vibrant illustrations, easy to understand language, and simple storyline!

What book, you ask? Josh Funk’s fabulous STEM Book for Kids, HOW TO CODE A SANDCASTLE.

HOW TO CODE A SANDCASTLE is a STEM Book for Kids that will Help Teach Them Basic Coding Concepts!

In HOW TO CODE A SANDCASTLE, illustrated by Sara Palacios, Pearl has been trying to build the perfect sandcastle all summer long, but some things just keep getting in her way. Stray frisbees — ugh! Frisky puppies — double ugh!

Eventually, however, Pearl and her trusty friend Pascal have the perfect plan to build their sandcastle. They will use code, of course! Using fundamental coding concepts and manageable steps, Pearl and Pascal figure out how to solve their problem.

The result? One awesome sand castle!

Pickle and I just love HOW TO CODE A SANDCASTLE, as it explains coding in easily digestible steps without shying away from actual coding concepts and lingo, like the notion of sequences and loops. It empowers children by giving them actual knowledge without talking down to them, helping them to feel ready to tackle these concepts on their own.

HOW TO CODE A SANDCASTLE is a brilliant introduction to coding, one I will be using at home and at school to help make my students feel confident in this new arena and compelled to begin coding on their own.

And guess what? This fabulous book is getting a sequel, and we simply cannot wait! HOW TO CODE A ROLLERCOASTER will be this September, and you can preorder it now!
