Arlo Needs Glasses is a must-read for kids getting specs for the first time!
If you have a little one getting glasses for the first time, Arlo Needs Glasses, by Barney Saltzberg, will be your new favorite book!
Arlo Needs Glasses is an engaging story about a dog named Arlo who — you guessed it! — needs to get glasses! Arlo’s owner takes him to the eye doctor after Arlo can no longer play catch. The poor pup simply can’t see the ball! But once he gets his new specs, Arlo is back in the game in no time.
Arlo Needs Glasses is a perfect interactive read aloud!
There are several things about this book that make it so perfect for little kids who need to embark on the glasses-wearing journey for the very first time. First, the plot is silly, simple and easy to understand, even for the youngest of kids. When it comes to a subject that can be foreign to children, simplicity is key!
Even better? This story is an interactive dream!
The book contains some of the best pop-ups out there, including an eye chart which shows kids how people with vision challenges may view the alphabet, as well as a really cool, multi layered phoropter. These elements truly help demystify the experience a little one may have at his first visit to the eye doctor!
But the most fun part of the book is the fact that it comes with several pairs of adorable frames for Arlo to “try on” after his visit to the doctor. And of course, once Arlo gets his glasses, he resumes his spot as the neighborhood’s best ball-catcher.
Thanks to Arlo Needs Glasses, my own bespectacled kiddo rocked his glasses with pride!
My youngest son got his first pair of glasses just before he was a year old to help correct farsightedness and strabismus. I was a nervous wreck. How would he take to them? Would he keep them on?
Of course, as soon as we got home with his new specs, I was on the internet researching books that would help explain to him (and, perhaps more importantly, his big brother) why he now had to wear glasses every day. Arlo Needs Glasses blew the various books I bought for my kids out of the water.

Both of my kiddos fell in love with this story. They had so much fun putting the different glasses on Arlo, and they both gained a clearer understanding of why my little guy has to wear his specs every day.
Arlo Needs Glasses is simply a must have for any child who just got his or her first pair of specs. It will undoubtedly replace their frowns or frustrations with a smile, and I can’t rave about it enough!
