So what makes a great preschool book?

When selecting preschool books for your children, there are several things you want to keep in mind. Young children are new learners, so they adore books that help them understand important concepts in tangible ways. These books will help your little ones get ready for kindergarten, and are specifically designed to teach objects, ideas and activities. Consider the following tips:

  • Concepts, concepts, concepts! Look for books that teach kids about colors, counting, letters, shapes, rhyming, opposites, feelings and more. Concept books make the very best books for preschoolers!
  • Contain lots of repetition and rhyme. Kids love being able to fill in words in stories, and repetitive stanzas and the ability to guess a missing word offer them great ownership over the books they read.
  • Length matters – don’t go too long! Little ones have very short attention spans, and you’ll keep them engaged best when reading books with small amounts of text on each page.
  • Get books that are interactive. Kids love to learn about the world around them by engaging with new concepts. Look for books that offer fun textures, deep grooves, flaps to lift, tabs to pull  and other unique surprises.
  • Kids love seeing recognizable experiences in stories. Look for books with little ones at the park, at school, eating dinner with family, going to the doctor, and more.
  • Use stories to introduce new vocabulary. Books that associate words with pictures of commonly seen items inside the house, in the classroom and outside or at the park are terrific for growing learners.
