Under My Hijab, by Hena Khan, is a gorgeous multicultural children’s book

It comes as no surprise that I adore stories that showcase all of the many glorious people, cultures and religions in this beautiful world of ours, and I therefore love multicultural children’s books.

Diverse books — books that celebrate the beauty in each and every one of us, no matter where we live or what we practice or what we wear — are absolutely fundamental to nurturing kindness and compassion in our children.

Not only do multicultural children’s picture books help our kids learn about people who may seem outwardly different from themselves, but these books are critical to get into the hands of young people who have been historically underrepresented in children’s literature. There is nothing like handing a child a book and watching her eyes sparkle as she sees herself reflected in the pages

Under My Hijab shows the hijab as a symbol of pride

Under My Hijab, written by Hena Khan and illustrated by Aaliya Jaleel, is such a special book — not to mention a vitally important one to add to your collections. I

n this tender story, a young girl studies the way six very important women in her life wear their hijabs, how each of these special ladies showcase their personalities through them, and how their uniqueness also shines in the way they wear their hair when the hijab comes off in their homes.

From the kitchen to the doctor’s office to the art studio, Under My Hijab illustrates the hijab as a symbol of pride within Muslim culture, encouraging one little girl to dream of the ways she will wear her own hijab when she is bigger.

Under My Hijab is an important mirror book!

Under My Hijab is a tender and lovely story, one that is absolutely wonderful for illustrating the unique ways Muslim women wear their hijabs and what they look like underneath their beautiful head scarves. But more than that, it is a gorgeous story for young Muslim girls who cherish the older women in their lives, kids who want to learn from their mothers and grandmothers and aunts and cousins and emulate their wonderful characteristics. Under My Hijab is meaningful and oh-so-necessary, a story that celebrates diversity and showcases the hijab as a garment of pride and beauty.

I fell hard for this book and the way it provides a window into the lives of Muslim ladies, showing them at work, at play and celebrating their glorious culture. A mirror book for many, and a window book for so many more, Under My Hijab provides a terrific look at contemporary Muslim culture and has a critically important place on bookshelves around the world!
