It’s hard to not love a story about a boy who loves books- or, rather, eats books- and then learns to love to read them.
Oliver Jeffers delivers yet another awesome picture book with The Incredible Book Eating Boy. The narrative is simple, but the story is humorous and engaging: Henry wants to eat books because he wants to become the smartest boy in the world. The pictures and text layout are what shine here and immediately captivated Pickle’s attention. We love the tiny bookish details hidden in each illustration, and you can’t beat the fact that the pictures actually appear to be drawn on pages of old books.

Perhaps the best part of this story comes once the final page is turned. The narrative closes with the reader believing Henry has given up on eating books — until they find a bite-sized chunk missing from the back cover and last page. This is a fantastic detail that truly makes it seem like Henry sneaked into your kid’s room and took a chomp out of the book while your little one was still at school. The Incredible Book Eating Boy is fun and funny and a great addition to any library. Can’t beat a story that captures a sense of wonder in your little one and demonstrates that books truly are irresistible!
