Chimpanzees for Tea!, by Jo Empson

August 24, 2016 by Lauren Davis in all, pre-K (3-5), Embrace Your Sillies

So I know @kidlitpicks series on #repeatreads was last month, but Pickle has been asking for Jo Empson's Chimpanzees for Tea! again and again and again. And it's not hard to understand why. This silly read makes him erupt with laughter every time we pull it off the shelf, and I get such a kick out of reading it with him for this very reason.

In Chimpanzees for Tea!, Vincent's mom sends him to the store with a short grocery list of five items. But when a gust of wind catches the list and it sails away from Vincent, Vincent is left to use nothing but his memory as he tries to remember what to bring home to his mother.
The result? Total and utter chaos.

Remember the game "telephone"? That's what this book reminds me of, though it is even goofier because the only one playing is Vincent himself! This is such a great book to read if you want to focus on sequencing or enhancing your little one's memory, as your kids will love trying to remember what Vincent's mom asked him to bring home, and in what order. It is also fabulous for discussing rhyming words and concepts with your kids. Add to this the book's whimsical and vibrant illustrations, and you have a highly entertaining story just perfect for a classroom read aloud or a silly bedtime book. Two trunks up!! Can't recommend this highly enough for the laughter it elicits alone!
