Calling all bespectacled little ones!! Do any young children in your life wear glasses? If so, they need to read Arlo Needs Glasses by Barney Saltzberg! Bo got his first pair of glasses just before he was a year old to help correct farsightedness and strabismus. Of course, as soon as we got home with his new specs, I was on the internet researching books that would help explain to him (and, perhaps more importantly, his big brother) why Bo now has to wear glasses every day. Arlo blew the various books I bought for my boys out of the water. This is an engaging story about a dog who needs to get glasses - his owner takes him to the eye doctor after Arlo can no longer play catch. The book contains great pop-ups, such as an eye chart which demonstrates how people with vision challenges view the letters, and a really cool, multi layered phoropter. But the most fun part of the book is that it comes with several pairs of adorable frames for Arlo to "try on" after his visit to the doctor. And of course, once Arlo gets his glasses, he resumes his spot as the neighborhood's best ball-catcher. Pickle just loved this book, loved putting the different glasses on Arlo, and has a better understanding of why Bo has to wear his frames every day. This is a must have for any child who just got his or her first pair of specs. It will undoubtedly replace their frowns or frustrations with a smile.
